How to avoid high risks while installing furnaces

About 55,000 house fires break out in the US every year. Needless to say, this ends in more than property damage, rebuilding your whole house, emotional stress, accidents and financial liabilities. The good news about housefires is that, they are preventable, as most of them are caused due to improper installation or maintenance of equipment. 1. Safety Instructions

     a) There should be enough space between the furnace unit and the walls, ceilings, shelves and other appliances to prevent overheating. The area should be well-ventilated and away from direct sunlight, preferable choosing the north or east direction.

      b) Keep the area around the pilot light clear from household items and debris.

      c) Keep away combustible items such as chemical products and solvents away from the furnace as they emit vapors and may start a huge explosion.

     d) The furnace must be installed on a solid surface that will not slip or slide. The furnace pad should be isolated from the rest of the building structure to prevent vibration or sound emissions.

      e) Technicians recommend an annual furnace cleaning to keep it free from dirt and gunk. The unit filter should be changed every three months, and they are inexpensive and can be done by homeowners themselves. This also keeps you safe from carbon monoxide emittances, as a properly maintained system will direct the gas outside of your home. If your chimney is dirty, your system will not be able to vent carbon monoxide.

2. Load calculation 

A contractor should under the load calculation of the house to determine its heating and cooling requirements. Instead of simply considering the house’s size, the contractor should consider the family size, projected usage and the average climate.

3. Ventilation 

The ventilation system should be in accordance with the furnace installation requirements. The old venting system can be used if it’s compatible to your new furnace, therefore look for a contractor familiar with ductwork installation.

4. Garage furnaces 

An elevation height of 18 meters between the garage floor and the point of ignition must be maintained. The furnace should be kept away from the path leading to the garage area.

5. Restricted areas 

Heating furnaces should not be installed in restricted areas such as the bedroom, closets and bathrooms. In case of an attic, furnace installation requires a minimum of five feet from the floor to ceiling with a 30”x30” opening within 20 feet of the furnace’s location.

6. Underfoot furnaces 

Underfoot furnaces should have a light switch near it to aid in visibility during working. Suspended furnaces should have an elevation of 6 feet height above the ground.

7. Inspection

After installation, your professional should provide you with a description of the installation for the building inspector to check. Chimneys should be frequently inspected to verify the compliance with the standard 350 degree Celsius.
